Turkish president calls for reforming of UN Security Council

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday demanded reforms in the UN Security Council, saying a system where the fate of the rest of the world was dependent on the will of “only five states” would not be sustainable.

 

10 out of 15 members of the UN Security Council change periodically, based on the principle of rotation. There are five permanent members in the Council – Russia, US, Great Britain, France and China, who enjoy the right of veto.

 

The chairman of the board is replaced by the rule of rotation. Since April 1, Russia has become the chairman of the  Council, which is accused of violating the UN Charter and international law due to its war against Ukraine. 

 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Council was headed by a “terrorist state”, which shows that the UN Security Council “needs to be reformed”.
