Ukraine has received a new IRIS-T air defence system from Germany, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Sunday, thanking Berlin for its continued support in strengthening Ukraine’s air defences amid ongoing Russian attacks.
“Thanks to such strong support, thousands of lives have been saved,” Zelensky said, while stressing that Ukraine also needs additional missile supplies to ensure its air defence systems can effectively repel Russian strikes.
The President also highlighted recent agreements reached with Sweden, including a new military assistance package aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air force, particularly through support related to Gripen fighter aircraft. He added that new contributions are also being made this year under the PURL programme.
“We rely on both the United States and our European partners. Anti-ballistic missile defence remains a key priority for Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.
He noted a stronger air defence network will provide greater protection for civilians and help eliminate what he described as one of Russia’s remaining military advantages in the war.
