A Georgian volunteer fighter, Mikheil Shedania, has been killed in Ukraine, bringing the total number of Georgian combatants who have died in the war to more than 80 since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
The news of Shedania’s death was first reported by fellow fighters and later confirmed by Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Shedania was reportedly attempting to evacuate fellow soldiers from a high-risk combat zone when he was killed. He held Ukrainian citizenship and was serving in the ranks of the Azov Regiment, one of Ukraine’s prominent military units.
Reports indicated that Shedania’s body will be repatriated to Georgia, where he will be laid to rest.
Since the early days of the war, several hundred Georgian volunteers have joined the fight in Ukraine, many of them serving on the front lines in various battalions. The first wave of Georgian fighters reportedly arrived in Ukraine in early March 2022.
