The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko has slammed the Georgian government after Grigory Karasin, Chair of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, stated yesterday that Russia ‘has noticed Tbilisi’s refusal to impose sanctions on Russia’ following its invasion of Ukraine.
Attending a meeting in Moscow with Georgian and Russian experts, which was a private initiative, Karasin also said that the Georgian-Russian relations have a ‘bright future.’
“Russia’s Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Chairman Grigory Karasin praises Georgia for not supporting the West’s sanctions on Russia and promises quid pro quo. Tbilisi – after all that Russia has done to you since 2008, don’t you feel ashamed?” Nikolenko tweeted.
The ruling Georgian Dream party MPs have stated that Moscow deliberately makes such statements to spark controversies, questions and ‘benefit the interests of the radical opposition.’
Vice Speaker from the ruling party Gia Volski said that Georgia is the second target for Russia after Ukraine and that the Georgian government has to act ‘very cautiously.’
Georgia has not imposed sanctions on Russia. However, the county has supported all international moves and resolutions in support of Ukraine and is also active to ensure humanitarian assistance, the Georgian Dream government says.
