US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan says that the case of Georgia’s former president Mikheil Saakashvili, who was arrested in Tbilisi yesterday after eight years out of the country, ‘will be a test for the Georgian judiciary and the court system.’

She also said that Georgia requires more political stability and less polarisation.

EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell has stated that today’s municipal elections will also be a ‘test for Georgian democracy.’

Saakashvili who returned to Georgia ahead of Georgia’s municipal elections is now in Rustavi 12th prison.

He says all charges against him are ‘politically motivated.’

Saakashvili has been convicted in Georgia in absentia back in 2018 in two cases for abuse of authority, while three other cases are still in courts.

The Georgian Chief Prosecutor’s Office is also investigating how Saakashvili crossed into Georgia from Ukraine for the elections.
