The US House of Representatives has approved the Georgia Support Act which was initiated by Congressman Gerry Connolly and Adam Kinzinger back on February 8, 2021.
The bill currently has a total of 19 co-sponsors, from both the Democratic and Republican parties.
The bill supports the right of Georgians to freely determine their future and make independent and sovereign choices on foreign and security policy, including regarding their country’s relationship with other nations and international organizations, without interference, intimidation, or coercion by other countries.
It supports Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic and European integration and does not recognize territorial changes effected by force, including the illegal invasions and occupations of Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali by Russia.
The document condemns ongoing detentions, kidnappings, and other human rights violations committed in the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali forcibly occupied by Russia, including the recent killings of Georgian citizens Archil Tatunashvili, Giga Otkhozoria, Davit Basharuli, and others.
The bill supports peaceful conflict resolution in Georgia, including by Russia to fully implement the European Union-mediated ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008.
The document also supports the establishment of international security mechanisms in the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali, and the safe and dignified return of internally displaced persons to their homes.
