A bipartisan coalition of US senators has introduced legislation aimed at imposing additional sanctions on Russia if it fails to engage in meaningful peace negotiations with Ukraine.

The proposed bill, led by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, seeks to pressure Moscow into ceasing hostilities and pursuing a lasting resolution to the ongoing conflict.

The legislation outlines punitive measures targeting entities that support Russian aggression, including the imposition of tariffs on nations purchasing Russian oil, gas, and uranium. This approach reflects a concerted effort to leverage economic tools to influence Russia’s actions in the region.

The bill has garnered support from an equal number of Republican and Democratic senators, exemplifying rare bipartisan unity in the divided US Congress. Senator Graham emphasized the importance of sending a clear message to Russia, saying that the United States stands firmly against aggression and in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

President Donald Trump has also expressed frustration with the protracted conflict, threatening to impose additional tariffs and sanctions on Russia if it does not agree to a ceasefire and peace settlement.
