US vows Ukraine major military support amid political uncertainty

The United States has pledged substantial military aid to Ukraine, including hundreds of thousands of artillery shells, thousands of missiles, and hundreds of armored vehicles by mid-January, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan announced during talks with Ukrainian Presidential Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak.

In addition to weaponry, the US will support Ukraine by addressing manpower challenges through troop training at overseas facilities.
New sanctions targeting Russia are also expected in the coming weeks, aiming to weaken Moscow’s military capabilities and bolster Ukraine’s negotiating position, The Guardian reports.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials, including Yermak and Ukraine’s ambassador to the US, Oksana Markarova, are holding talks with key figures from Donald Trump’s transition team.

Among those involved are incoming Vice President J.D. Vance, potential National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Keith Kellogg, designated as Trump’s special representative for Russia and Ukraine.
These discussions have gained urgency after US House Speaker Mike Johnson stated he would not bring President Joe Biden’s $24 billion Ukraine aid package to a vote.

The uncertainty surrounding future US support adds pressure on Kyiv amid its ongoing resistance to Russian aggression.
