European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to explain recent legislative changes that may undermine Ukraine’s efforts to join the European Union. The information was reported by Politico.
According to European officials, the new law—reportedly limiting the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU)—raises serious concerns about Kyiv's commitment to the rule of law and anti-corruption reforms, which are key conditions for EU accession.
Brussels has requested clarification from the Ukrainian government on whether the legislation complies with EU standards. Von der Leyen emphasized that “preserving the integrity and independence of anti-corruption institutions is not negotiable” if Ukraine hopes to advance on its path toward EU membership.
The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of Ukraine’s reform progress as the country seeks to begin formal membership talks with the bloc. EU officials have warned that any backsliding could delay or derail negotiations.
