Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday said Europe had already “lost Georgia,” as the country had become dependent on Russia and its democratic development was deteriorating.

“We have already lost Georgia in Europe - human rights and a European-style state system there are only worsening. Georgia is dependent on Russia, and Belarus has also been moving in that direction for many years. Europe cannot allow itself to lose Moldova as well,” Zelenskyy told the United Nations General Assembly.

The Ukrainian President stressed the international response to Russian aggression had been insufficient and recalled that the world failed to support Georgia in the wake of Russia’s attack.

“Europe must support Moldova now - with financing and energy assistance, not only during wars or through symbolic gestures. It is essential to defend the rights of people and nations in regions where those rights are under threat. The UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights must be upheld everywhere,” Zelenskyy said.
