Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday said he is prepared to take part in national elections, but stressed that any vote can only be held under two key conditions - adequate security and necessary legislative changes.
Zelenskyy dismissed as “completely inadequate” claims that the government was clinging to power and therefore prolonging the war, insisting that elections were impossible without guarantees for citizens’ safety amid ongoing Russian attacks.
“There are two issues for holding elections: security - how to do this under attacks and missile strikes - and the legislative basis for the legitimacy of the vote,” he said.
Zelenskyy added that he would appeal to the United States and European partners to help create the conditions required for holding elections.
“I am ready for elections. I am also asking the United States, perhaps together with our European colleagues, to ensure election security. After that, within 60-90 days, Ukraine will be ready to hold them,” he said.
The president also urged members of parliament to prepare draft amendments concerning elections during martial law, saying he expected relevant proposals soon.
“Tomorrow I will be in Ukraine, I am waiting for proposals from partners and MPs, and I am ready to go to elections,” Zelenskyy said.
