Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump met at the White House on Monday, joined by top European officials, to discuss potential diplomatic solutions to the ongoing war with Russia. The talks come after Trump’s recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where Moscow rejected a cease-fire proposal and called for Ukraine to cede territory in the east.
One of the central issues on the agenda is Ukraine’s security guarantees. Zelenskyy said the country needed “everything” to prevent further Russian attacks, while Trump suggested the US would play a role in a NATO-style framework led by Europe. “It’s very important to get the deal done”, Trump said.
Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s readiness to pursue a diplomatic path and expressed willingness to participate in a trilateral summit with Trump and Putin, though Moscow has yet to commit. He highlighted the urgency of ending the conflict, citing the recent deadly Russian strike on Kharkiv.
“We need to stop this war, to stop Russia. And we need support [from our] American and European partners,” he said.
“We supported the idea of the United States – of, personally, President Trump – to stop this war, to make a diplomatic way of finishing this war,” he added.
The Ukrainian leader also praised a new NATO programme that allows member states to purchase weapons from the US to be sent to Ukraine. Trump, in turn, lauded the arrangement, which channels US military support through allies rather than direct transfers.
Following the White House discussions, Trump said he plans to call Putin to propose a potential trilateral summit, describing it as a possible turning point to end the war.
Zelenskyy used the meeting to thank Trump for his personal efforts in supporting Ukraine and expressed hope that strong cooperation with US and European partners could help bring the conflict to a close.
