Turkish Foreign Minister and Anthony Blinken to Meet in the U.S.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in New York. Erdoğan's "veto" of Finland and Sweden joining NATO and the war in Ukraine are likely topics of discussion.

This was reported by Hurriyet Daily News.

Turkey's Foreign Ministry said the meeting will take place on May 18. It will be the first foreign minister-level meeting of the Turkey-U.S. Strategic Mechanism, which Presidents Erdogan and Biden agreed to last year.

An expected key topic of conversation will be Turkey's objection to the admission of Finland and Sweden to NATO, which formally applied today. Turkey is the only country that is blocking their accession.

Ankara cites Sweden's and Finland's tolerance of Kurdish organizations and opposition as formal reasons, but unofficially Erdogan is known to want concessions from Washington on other issues - notably the acquisition of U.S. fighter jets - in this way.

The U.S. excluded Turkey from the overall F-35 fighter program because of Turkey's purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems. Erdoğan then began talks about forty F-16s and equipment to upgrade its existing planes.
