Italian law enforcement officers arrested the leader of the Sicilian mafia "Cosa Nostra" Matteo Messina Denaro. He hid from the police for about 30 years.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crocetto announced this on Twitter.
"Matteo Messina Denaro has been arrested! Congratulations to the police, the judicial system, the thousands of people who work every day in silence to protect justice," he said.
Italian media say that the Carabinieri have arrested a mobster in Sicily in the province of Trapani. It happened in a private clinic where Denaro was to receive treatment.
Matteo Messina Denaro is considered one of the leaders of the mafia organization Cosa Nostra. He was arrested 30 years after he fled justice. It happened in 1993 in Palermo, Sicily. When Denaro fled, the judge was just meeting with reporters for a greeting before the start of the hearing.
