The head of the British Foreign Ministry: the transfer of shells with depleted uranium to Ukraine will not be a nuclear escalation

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley insists there is no nuclear escalation in the war in Ukraine due to the transfer of depleted uranium shells to Kyiv.

Cleverley made the statement after Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized Britain's plan to supply Ukraine with depleted uranium munitions.

"There is no nuclear escalation. The only country in the world that talks about nuclear issues is Russia. There is no threat to Russia, it is only about helping Ukraine in its defense," he said.

On Monday, Great Britain confirmed that it will supply Ukraine with depleted uranium ammunition. This material is used in weapons because it is easier to penetrate armor with it.

Depleted uranium is the waste of the uranium enrichment process, which consists in separating the uranium-235 isotope from natural uranium.

Due to its high density, depleted uranium is also used in armor of military equipment, in particular in M1 Abrams tanks, and in armor-piercing projectiles.

It will be recalled that Ukraine will receive twice as many Challenger 2 tanks from Great Britain than London originally promised.
