Stoltenberg in Davos: The way to peace is more weapons for Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that he sees no signs of Russian President Vladimir Putin's plans for peace and called for continued military support for Ukraine. He said this during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

"What we can do is simply maximize the likelihood that at some point President Putin will realize that continuing this war will have too high a price. And then at some point he will have to sit down and negotiate some kind of a just and lasting peace in which Ukraine will prevail as a sovereign independent state. And the paradox is that if we want this to happen, a peaceful and fair end to this war, the way to get there is more weapons for Ukraine," he said.

Thus, as the Secretary General emphasized, "the more reliable we are in our military support, the more likely it is that the diplomats will succeed." Stoltenberg noted that what happens at the negotiating table with diplomats is very closely linked to the situation on the battlefield.

"There are no signs that Putin is planning peace now, but he will do so when he realizes that we will not give up, that we have the military power to support Ukraine," the NATO Secretary General said.
