Zelensky proposes to terminate agreement with Belarus on change of citizenship: draft law submitted to Rada

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky proposes to the Verkhovna Rada to terminate the agreement between Ukraine and Belarus on simplifying the procedure for changing citizenship for Ukrainian citizens permanently residing in Belarus and Belarusian citizens permanently residing in Ukraine.

The corresponding draft law No. 0274 was registered in the Verkhovna Rada on Thursday.

As stated in the explanatory note to the bill, one of the reasons for the termination of the agreement is “the support of the self-proclaimed leadership of Belarus for the military and political leadership of the Russian Federation, by whose decision Russia grossly violated the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine by carrying out an armed invasion of its territory.”

It should be noted that the agreement was signed on March 12, 1999 in Kyiv and ratified by the law of Ukraine on October 21 of the same year, and entered into force in Ukraine on April 8, 2000.
