Law on the mobilization of prisoners: Zelensky supported the initiative

On Friday, May 17, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law providing for the possibility of mobilizing convicts into the army. Information about this is provided in the official text of the draft law.

According to the new law, certain categories of convicts and prisoners will be able to serve in the army under contract during martial law. However, the decision on this will be made by the court.

The Ministry of Defense explains that such mobilized persons will be used in special units, subject to a positive conclusion of the military medical commission and the readiness of the commander to accept them for service.

The law also provides for restrictions on the mobilization of persons convicted of serious crimes, including terrorism and corruption offenses.
