Seven people have been killed and another critically injured in a serious road accident near Gardabani, eastern Georgia, on Thursday. 

The crash occurred in the village of Birliki, where, according to initial reports, a speeding vehicle collided with a tree.

Emergency medical teams and patrol police officers were deployed to the scene.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia said an investigation had been launched under Article 276 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which concerns violations of traffic safety or vehicle operation rules resulting in loss of life.

The condition of the injured survivor is reported to be critical.
