Georgia may lose EU candidate status due to law on foreign agents: MEPs demand

European parliamentarians demand the suspension of Georgia's candidate status in the European Union.

According to Civil.ge, more than 30 MEPs have sent a letter to EU diplomat Josep Borrell calling for the suspension of Georgia's candidacy because of its law on foreign agents.

The letter states that the actions of the Georgian authorities, in particular the introduction of the “Russian” law on foreign agents and the suppression of peaceful demonstrations, are undemocratic and violate the obligations of the EU candidate country.

MEPs demand that the candidate's status be suspended until these issues are resolved and an interim assessment of the progress of implementation of the European Commission's recommendations.
