NATO countries will discuss a new goal of defense spending - Stoltenberg

NATO countries will discuss defense spending targets in the coming months. Some are calling for the 2% target to be turned into a minimum figure, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

 This is reported by Reuters.

"Some allies are strongly in favor of changing the current 2% target to a minimum," Stoltenberg said in an interview with DPA.

Stoltenberg announced that he would lead the negotiations. "We will meet, we will have ministerial meetings, we will have negotiations in the capitals," he said.

He did not say which NATO countries are calling for a more ambitious goal.

The head of NATO said that he intends to reach an agreement no later than the next regular NATO summit, which will be held in the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, on July 11-12.
