Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and wounded. The attacker has been detained, local media report.


Fico was shot in the Slovak city of Handlová. The shooter was hiding in the crowd that came to the building where the Slovak prime minister was speaking. He fired a shot from the crowd. Probably 3-4 times. Then he tried to escape, but was caught by eyewitnesses and security guards.


A helicopter arrived and took the wounded prime minister away. Preliminarily, he is being taken to a hospital in Bratislava.


Social media reports that the politician's condition is very serious. According to media reports, the Slovak prime minister was shot 2-3 times: in the limbs, chest and stomach.

Robert Fico's Facebook page officially stated that he was “in a life-threatening condition” and “received multiple injuries.”


“He is currently in a life-threatening condition. He is currently being transported by helicopter to Banská Bystrica, as it would take too much time to transport him to Bratislava given the need for urgent intervention. Everything will be resolved in the next few hours,” the statement said.
