Ukraine has received recommendations from NATO to join the Alliance – Stoltenberg

NATO foreign ministers at a meeting in Brussels on November 29 provided Ukraine with recommendations on primary reforms needed to join the Alliance. This was announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a press conference in Brussels.

"We discussed NATO membership and we gave recommendations on the primary reforms that Ukraine should implement, including the fight against corruption and support for human rights. And Ukraine is now much closer to NATO than ever before. And we continue to support its fight for freedom and its path to NATO," Stoltenberg said.

The NATO Secretary General emphasized that he was impressed with how Ukraine was implementing these reforms at all during the full-scale Russian invasion.

"There have been concrete changes in legislation. There are also changes in security and Ukraine is modernizing its intelligence structures. And if we talk about fighting corruption and fighting terrorism, it is important for Ukraine. After all, it helps to become a stronger state. And to fight not only against Russia as an aggressor. It also helps to get closer to NATO," Stoltenberg said.

According to him, one of the topics of the meeting today was how NATO member states can cooperate with Ukraine on these issues.

"How we can use the NATO-Ukraine Council to continue working on accession. And we discussed a work program to continue to talk about the modernization of Ukrainian society. Some laws and steps have already been taken and implemented. We see certain steps in the fight against corruption, and this is an ongoing process," added the Alliance Secretary General.
